Ellen Schreiber Interview

1. Love Bites will be released in May, what can we expect to see from Raven and Alexander?

Alexander’s best friend, Sebastian, comes to Dullsville to see what has kept Alexander from returning to Romania. Now that Alexander has found true love in Dullsville, Sebastian wants to do the same. It is full of romance and dreamy vampires.

2. Raven is a strong and fearless character.  Are you naturally drawn to strong female heroines?

I wanted to write about a strong, confident girl. I think it is more exciting to read about a girl who knows what she wants. I think many girls do–teens are very passionate and have very definite opinions about their tastes, loves, and thoughts. I wanted to explore that and write about a girl who embodies those qualities.

3. Raven is considered an ‘alternative’ girl.  Do you see yourself that way?  Do you share any personality traits in common with her?

In high school, I wanted to be an actress, which wasn’t the norm or a stable career. That made me feel different, but I liked it. But I wasn’t nearly as strong or vocal as Raven.

4. We heard a rumor that a Vampire Kisses movie is in the works. Is there any truth to that?

No… There was an option on it, but it expired. It is back with my agent.

5. Do you know how many books there will be in this series or do you focus on one book at a time?

I usually focus on one book at a time. I am currently writing VK 8–but I do have ideas for more. :)

6. You’ve written about mermaids, vampires and werewolves – do you have a favorite fantasy character?

I love them all in different ways. I’ve been writing about Alexander for so many years now–so I really like vampires. But I am also writing about a hot and heroic romantic werewolf and I’m having fun with that as well.

7. Do you have a favorite fantasy book/author that you would recommend to young adults?

A Wrinkle in Time. It was one of the few books I actually read growing up. You really feel like you are going through what the characters are feeling and doing. I remember it to this day.

8. Many of our readers are aspiring writers. Can you offer any advice on writing fantasy/sci-fi?

I just say “Do it!” There is no magic formula, so just enjoy the process. Enjoy writing. Fantasy has to seem as real as reality based fiction. Otherwise it can be hokey.

9. Can you offer any advice for someone seeing a literary agent/publisher?  Did you attend writing courses, conferences, peer groups?  Did you already know people in the business?

My brother had books published in Europe and one in the US. So his advice and knowledge was amazing! I only attended one and it led me to joining a group SWBCI. This led to finding out about Katherine Tegen at HarperCollins who published my books. I recommend the WRITER”S MARKET.

10. Are you doing a book tour/signings?  Where can our readers find you on the internet?

I just completed teh supernaturalsummer tour which was a blast! I also go out on library  and school visits. You can check out the latest book signings and book news on www.ellenschreiber.com
